I believe there is a desperate hunger for a film like The Consciousness of The Christ. For too long –1700 years, in fact –the real life teachings of Jesus have been sublimated and manipulated by a Jesus Religion that is often an exact opposite of the Jesus Way.

Many fundamentalist Christian institutions, although they encourage personal piety, glorify and sustain a culture of death, sin, guilt, fear, war and hierarchical oppression. This would have been anathema to Jesus. He came to awaken us from these very nightmares. The idea that Jesus will return, sailing down through the skies on God’s roller coaster to make war on billions of unbelievers, and, once they are safely in hell, establish his kingdom, is blasphemous to his actual teachings. The Consciousness of The Christ answers that Jesus was about a new humane humanity that lives within our potential here and now. Jesus manifested absolute love and absolute forgiveness. He was, as Gandhi said, the most nonviolent person in history. He rejected no one, and no group of people. There is room for all in his vast territory of love.

I refuse to yield the universal Christ of universal love to a fundamentalism that is the tool of violence, prejudice, domination, and wealth that exploits and oppresses the impoverished. Jesus knew that through personal and collective transformation we can do away forever with these great plagues which have brought us to the edge of global destruction. The principles of this New Humanity are what his earliest followers lived.

Our purpose has been to retell the story of perhaps the greatest spiritual genius of human history. We tell of his belief in our true innocence and sinlessness, of our potential to live beyond duality in a Unity of eternal love which can re-make creation itself into the image of love.

We want to re-introduce people to Jesus of Nazareth.

The Consciousness of The Christ is for the rest of us...people driven away from seeking the transformative power of Christhood by their early experiences of a judgmental fear-, repentance- and reward-based domination church. It is for the many who walk other spiritual paths, that they might know that the way of the Christ is one that values all of love’s paths to conscious evolution and the unity of humanity. The film is for those within the traditional church who sense that the Jesus they are being taught is no longer relevant in a world that is united in some ways as never before in history, yet seems to be coming apart at the seams. It is for women who rightfully see the old form Christianity as misogynist, whereas Jesus’ intent was to dissolve the patriarchy into a sacred marriage with the divine feminine. The film is for those who know it is time for a paradigm shift in the human journey, and that we are in the final moments of choice.

Even though we have not to date released the film, the clamoring for it has been astonishing. We held only three test screenings as we moved toward the final edit. It was received with near universal praise. Word of mouth following those screenings has brought a deluge of requests from New Thought and progressive churches, conferences and individuals around the country to see The Consciousness of The Christ.

We have brought to this effort the latest scholarly research into the historical Jesus, and the latest scriptural interpretations from sources such as the Jesus Seminar that focus on the actual sayings of the Christ rather than the later redactions that overlay those sayings. Interwoven into the retelling of Jesus’ story is commentary by some of finest authors and lecturers today on Christ consciousness.

And, I must say a few words about the experience of shooting on location in Israel, especially along the shores of the Sea of Galilee where Jesus first announced the coming of the New Humanity. There is something very special about the place and I hope that it comes through the lens. Like other sacred places of the world it seems imbued even today with the consciousness of the divine being who once walked there to proclaim our universal divinity. One can peer through a thin veil and almost see the great teacher walking the paths between the villages of Galilee, announcing the New Humanity, showing the way to self-healing, radically imploring us to love our enemies, declaring that peacemakers are the very sons and daughters of God, perfectly in God’s image, and insisting that heaven is here, now, among us.

However you may be coming into your own God nature, may The Consciousness of The Christ strengthen you, affirm you and bring you the courage of endless love.
